Costas Karabatsas MD, DMed(Bristol), MRCOphth, FEBO, FRCS(Ed)Ophth is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology with the Department of Biomedical Sciences (Optics & Optometry), University of Western Attica (UNIWA), Athens, Greece. He is also a practicing Consultant Eye Surgeon, specializing in cornea, refractive and glaucoma surgery. He gained his Ophthalmology training and his clinical corneal fellowship in the UK, at the Department of Ophthalmology, Bristol Eye Hospital, where he has also served as a Clinical Lecturer. He was awarded a Doctorate title (Doctor of Medicine, DMed Higher Degree) from the University of Bristol, for his thesis on management of post-keratoplasty astigmatism with the use of computerized topography. He subsequently completed a refractive surgery-LASIK mini Fellowship with the University of Crete, Greece. He has served (1999-2007) as Ass. Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology, Larissa University Hospital, Greece, and Head of the Anterior Segment Surgery, Cornea Transplant and Glaucoma Unit. In addition to his clinical role, he is active in research and teaching activities. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers, chapters and books. My current research interests stem from my desire to understand fundamental aspects of neurodegenerative diseases, and visual loss principally in Alzheimers Disease patients. These fundamentals aspects include the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of this pathology like beta amyloid toxicity, overproduction and intracellular deposition. Besides, recently I have been focused in the relantionship between oxidative stress and neurodegenerative process. I study these aspects using biochemical (WB, ELISA, Immunoprecipitation, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence) and molecular Biology techniques (PCR, RT PCR, qPCR) in order to demonstrate the effect of oxidative stress on the expression levels of different proteins and enzymes involved on the beta amyloid 1 42 production and degradation at the beginning of this disease. Besides my most recent research focuses on the development of an optic device (Optical Coherence Tomography OCT) in order to use it as an early diagnostic device for Alzheimers disease detection.

He has been in the pharmaceutical industry for >31-years holding leadership positions of increasing scope and responsibility, spanning Discovery Research, Drug Development and Regulatory Affairs. He has worked at Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert (Pfizer), Syntex Research (Roche), Alcon-Novartis, and is currently at Santen Inc (Executive Director, R&D Division). Thiago Goncalves dos Santos Martins received his MD in Medicine from Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) 2007, residency in Ophthalmology and fellowship in Glaucoma, Refractive Surgery, Retina, Congenital Glaucoma and Ultrasound in University of Sao Paulo (USP).Residency in cornea in Federal University of Sao Paulo. Master in Ophthalmology and Phd student at the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP). Has the title from the International Council of Ophthalmology, equivalency degree of Medicine from Lisbon University, speaks fluently English, German and Portuguese.
My current research interests stem from my desire to understand fundamental aspects of neurodegenerative diseases, and visual loss principally in Alzheimers Disease patients. These fundamentals aspects include the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of this pathology like beta amyloid toxicity, overproduction and intracellular deposition. Besides, recently I have been focused in the relantionship between oxidative stress and neurodegenerative process. I study these aspects using biochemical (WB, ELISA, Immunoprecipitation, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence) and molecular Biology techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR) in order to demonstrate the effect of oxidative stress on the expression levels of different proteins and enzymes involved on the beta amyloid 142 production and degradation at the beginning of this disease. Besides my most recent research focuses on the development of an optic device (Optical Coherence Tomography-OCT) in order to use it as an early diagnostic device for Alzheimers disease detection.
