Perspective
On August 26 and 27, 2026, the 6th Brazilian Plastics Congress
(6CBP)—a biennial event—took place in Joinville, Santa Catarina,
Brazil.
The purpose of this Congress is to improve the relationship
between plastics and society. It is not merely a polymer conference—
there are many high-quality ones held around the world—but
rather an opportunity to gain insight into the world of plastics, their
utility, and the importance of a product that is present in our daily
lives.
Clarifying the inaccurate information frequently seen in the
media is also a core objective of the Brazilian Plastics Congress. A
prime example is the excellent study conducted by the University
of São Paulo and the Federal University of ABC (Brazil)—published
in a leading industry journal—which unequivocally demonstrated,
on a global scale, the absence of BPA in plastic resins classified as
numbers 1 through 6 (or in the products made from them), which
are used, among other things, for food packaging.
The agenda included lectures on the use of artificial intelligence
in the plastics processing industry, product design for enhanced
sustainability, and life-cycle analyses comparing plastics with
other materials—analyses that clearly demonstrate the difficulty
of replacing plastics. Also featured was a startup developing new
medical products. All of this aligns with a concept articulated by a
speaker at the 3CBP: “Plastic is such a wonderful material that, if it
didn’t exist, it would have to be invented.”
Bringing factual information—based on scientifically proven,
peer-reviewed data—to the discussion is a fundamental part of the
effort to ensure we live in a society that makes healthy use of the
full potential of plastics.
